Students enrolled in the “Reading Like A Writer” workshop should read the following documents:
1. A short excerpt from the book Reading Like A Writer, by Francine Prose. File was emailed to you this morning.
2. A very short story: “Bullet in the Brain” by Tobias Wolff. Link: (http://public.wsu.edu/~bryanfry/Wolff, Bullet in the Brain.pdf) This story is so widely anthologized you can easily find it in print form in many other places such as fiction textbooks or in at your local library or bookstore.
3. The Kindle or iTunes sample of The Glass Castle: A Memoir, by Jeannette Walls (or equivalent in print). Note: The iTunes/ibooks sample is longer than the Amazon/Kindle version. If you are using Amazon/Kindle, just read the whole thing. If you download via iTunes/iBooks, read only halfway through II: “Desert”, just until the paragraph ending with “Tinkerbell can make it on her own,” Dad said. “She’s like my brave little girl. You are brave and ready for adventure, right?”. So just stop after the narrator leaves her toy behind.
I’m looking forward to seeing all of you and talking about these and additional texts that can be more quickly consumed. Pre-reading these documents will enable you to participate in a group exercise.
