Hi all,

Nick Mamatas here, with some publishing news. Though primarily a science fiction and horror writer, I have been making a transition into crime fiction. Today, two pieces came out cementing that move.

My first crime novel Love is the Law was released by Dark Horse Books, the prose fiction line of Dark Horse Comics. It’s a noir about punk rock, Trotskyism, and Aleister Crowley.

Here’s one of the cover blurbs, which I hope sums it all up:

“Good Lord—Nick Mamatas’ first crime novel makes The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo seem as edgy as Murder, She Wrote. Easily the most original mystery of the year, full of big ideas, serious menace, and raw attitude. As Dawn tells us in the very first line, she’s a fucking genius. Well, so is Mamatas.” — Duane Swierczynski, author of Fun & Games, X, and Judge Dredd

Sadly, I’m getting some reports that the book is being shelved in the Science Fiction/Fantasy section. Can’t win ’em all.

Also released today was Best American Mystery Stories 2013, which includes my short story “Thy Shiny Car In the Night”, which was published first last year in the anthology Long Island Noir.

Now that book is in the Mystery/Detective section!

    Congratulations. Wonderful blurb.

You want to be sure your publisher submits the book for the Edgar Awards. (Mystery Writers of America)

Yup, I even made Dark Horse sign up to be qualified as an MWA publisher in order to do so. Thanks!

  3. I hope your coattails are a long and wide so that we can all hitch a spot. Congratulations.
